Here is a closer look at the D-Fenders 127-98 season-opening win vs. the Iowa Energy, breaking down some of the more important aspects of the game:

The D-Fenders outscored the Energy 43-27 in the second quarter, en route to a 15-point halftime lead. Limiting Iowa to just 10-of-29 shooting in the period, while forcing six turnovers played a key part in the turnaround. Coach Coby Karl also noted the team’s defensive energy picked up after the first 12 minutes, which in turn, spurred the offensive outburst in the second.
“Defensively, we picked it up,” Karl said.”Defense is the first thing to get in transition, which is what we want to do. We were able to get some stops, and help each other out defensively, get out and get some easy buckets.”
PLAYER(S) OF THE GAME
Travis Wear and Justin Harper. These two players fit the traditional stretch-four mold in today’s game, which certainly helped space the floor for the entire team. Both Wear and Harper finished with 21 points apiece combined to drain five of L.A.’s 10 three-pointers on the night.
Vander Blue. The NBA D-League’s No. 1 prospect can flat-out score the ball, and he did so efficiently on this night, converting on 7-of-his 10 field goals and all six of his free-throw attempts.
STAT OF THE GAME
L.A. limited Iowa to just 36.5 percent shooting from the floor, including a 9-of-44 mark from the 3-point line (20.5 percent). After a 56-point first half, the D-Fenders held the Energy to 42 second-half points on 34.0 percent shooting.
The D-Fenders face the Santa Cruz Warriors in their home season opener on Saturday, Nov. 12. Tip-off is at 7:00pm.
